Oil, the Suburbs, and the Neoliberal Turn

Geographer Matthew Huber discusses the politics of oil and how the “American Way of Life” was created in response to the crisis of capitalism in 1930s — and, in turn, generated a rightwing backlash in the 1970s.

  1. Interesting presentation. I appreciate Mr. Huber’s insights. What is his suggested solution? If US citizens are resistant to a carbon tax because they are economically insecure, is the solution to give them money? Building more dams and infrastructure like the New Deal is NOT the solution. I do not see a way around carbon tax, even if it is politically unpopular. High energy users need to pay more. Either we bite the bullet now, or we will all suffer later.
