Caroline welcomes Martin A. Lee, author of “Acid Dreams” and “Smoke Signals,”
just returned from Poland, “giving a full report on what happened at the International Cannabinoid Research Society conference.”
Honoring imminent Terpestival (educational terpene cup) at Emerald Pharms (Hopland – Real Goods – Solar Living Center) that will take place July 23 and more, that we may be endogenously and entheogenically prepared for the RNC and the DNC at this wild time of Dire Beauty, for which the plants would like to guide our species back to conscious kinship.

Link to Martin A. Lee’s “Project CBD” website with more information on his books and upcoming events.

More information on Terpestival (Saturday, July 23, 2016 from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM (PDT) at Solar Living center – 13771 U.S. 101, Hopland, CA 95449)

The “twin-nature” (or “dualistic nature”) of cannabis. Cannabis/Ganja/Hashish as a “Trickster” plant (Gemini Trickster; Mercurius). The strange alchemy of pharmaceutical (therapeutic) “doubleness” (so the 16th-century alchemical image of two-headed Perfection of Hermaphrodite, Pythagorean “twoness,” and the old Dyadic archetypes: the male-female duo, Egyptian Geb, the Earth god and Nut, the goddess of Heaven; the Roman Janus, or the Dioscuri, Castor and Pollux). Twin-Cannabinoid Receptors.

Thus, the real tricky part (“the challenge”) of our neuro-symbiotic relationship to the plant is “to understand the dualistic nature of the plant because of its spirit.” (M.L.)

The challenge that encompasses both the *inner* (in one individual it reduces stress, in the other individual energy increase; one individual numbed out thoughtlessly alienated [“never having an interesting thought in their lives; not exalted thought and kinship but numbness”], the other profound insights of connection) and the *outer* worlds (one individual an anarchist, the other individual a fascist).

This is not by any means an easy task! (How can pot-smoking libertarians/Republicans be so cold-hearted when it comes to civil liberties and social-rustic issues across the board or maintain superstitious faith in the myth of the “free market,” blind to its manifest evils? Or, how can awesome social satirist Bill Maher be such a dedicated pot smoker and be so Islamophobic—of the very 12-13th century culture that thrived on hashish?)

Martin Lee advises against the notion that the cannabis plant has allegiance to any one position in the socio-political sphere or spectrum. (Considering that it’s entheogenic cousins were early discovered experimented with in a fascist context in the Third Reich and, on the other hand, fueled a great deal of anti-authoritarian dissent of both mystics and politicos in the 1960s. And, even within the history of the counterculture, let’s not forget about the pioneering work of ethnomycologist R. Gordon Wasson and his connections to the banking industry, which M.L. could tell about!) And he points out the *dual-natured* political positions of cannabis legalization movement; the coming together of progressive lefties and libertarians. (Btw, ex-Republican Governor of New Mexico and businessman, Gary Johnson, is running against Trump as the Libertarian Party nominee for president, and is dedicated to legalizing marijuana.)

How to account for the diametrically opposite effects of this *twin-natured* plant? (For instance, what about the down-home-bred Tea-Party fascism/racism of Ted Nugent and the fact that he’s come out in support of “medical marijuana”?) Are those who smoke marijuana and yet seem to be aiding and abetting the cause of the “Dementors of Doom” just taking in bad weed (laced with Roundup) or what?

Is it a matter of figuring out the difference between the “con man” (that which imprisons) and the “trickster” (that which liberates)? (And, one should of course consider that if cannabis has a “trickster” and not a “con man” character, then the “twin” archetype of the plant is still within its general “trickster” nature and its other side not the “con man.”)

I confess I haven’t figured out the reason for the diametrically opposite post-imbibing effects of this “Trickster” plant on an individual basis. I mean, if cannabis is, say, neutral, to an individual’s larger socio-political vision and allegiances, then is the difference accountable to (a) what said individual’s motives and desires are (what they want out of it) with cannabis and (b) *who* that person is (i.e., essence is perception, or, as Blake put it: The fool sees not the same tree that a wise man sees”.) Certainly, if cannabis also operates on more immaterial levels, such as the psychic and the etheric, then these subtle(body) variables must come into play in a determining way.

But one thing I do know—whatever you feed your cannabis experience with, then that will be your direction. So maybe the reason for cannabis-imbibing bigots/assholes is they get high while watching Fox News, or listening to Right-wing demagogues like Trump?! 😉 (PS: I admit I even tried it once, but I ended up in the hospital with a brain aneurysm!)

The challenge that encompasses both the *inner* world (in one individual the bi-directional adaptogen cannabis reduces stress, in the other individual energy boost; one individual numbed out thoughtlessly alienated [“never having an interesting thought in their lives; not exalted thought and kinship but numbness”], the other profound insights of connection) and the *outer* world (one individual an anarchist, the other individual a fascist). And, thus, what’s the relationship between beneficial terpenes/terpenoids and socio-political turpitude?

But this is not by any means an easy task! (How can pot-smoking libertarians/Republicans be so cold-hearted when it comes to civil liberties and social-justice issues across the board or maintain superstitious faith in the myth of the “free market,” blind to its manifest evils? Martin Lee throws a Trickster monkey-wrench into the cogs of the Drug War! What is the ultimate fall-back position against legalizing marijuana? It’s the fear-mongering of “OMG, Children will get it!” (The old boogeyman of Hippies giving marijuana their children.) But Martin Lee points out that you can put CBD cannabis oil on a baby’s pacifier and its brain tumor shrinks. “Oh, no, not babies too!!!”
