The Origins of the Black Power Movement and the Life of Stokely Carmichael

Stokely Carmichael, the charismatic, controversial black activist, stepped into the pages of history when he called for “Black Power” during a speech in Greenwood, Mississippi in June 1966. The Black Power term became a slogan for militant activist ever since.  Today, we bring a conversation with historian Peniel E. Joseph to talk about the history of the Black Power Movement and the life and times of Stokely Carmichael.

Guest: Peniel E. Joseph is professor of Public Affairs and the History in the College of Liberal Arts at The University of Texas at Austin. He is also the founding director of the LBJ School’s Center for the Study of Race and Democracy. And the author of many books on Black Power, including award-winning books Waiting ‘Til the Midnight Hour: A Narrative History of Black Power in America and Dark Days, Bright Nights: From Black Power to Barack Obama. His most recent book, Stokely: A Life.
