Education Today

Education Today – July 13, 2018

We interview Jovanka Beckles, candidate for California Assembly District 15.  We ask her about some of the states’s biggest education issues.   For example, the State Board just agreed to allow another charter school to be built in Oakland; this charter’s application had already been rejected by the Oakland district.    Is there a problem with state law when districts are told to close existing schools and required to open schools they didn’t ask for?    California districts have few Latino teachers, and there really is no way for them to change this, because the state is in charge of deciding who gets to teach.  Can anything be done about this?  We get into this and many other questions.  We have invited the other candidate in this race; she has not responded.
