Afghanistan Militias and Khataba

Salima Hamirani speaks with May Jeong about her article for In These Times on the American trained militia groups tasked with carrying out the ugliest parts of the ongoing war, and furthering American interests. May discusses the complexities that come with arming one remote group in the name of foreign stakeholder benefit.

In the second half of the show, Juan Gonzales discusses the thesis of his most recent book, Reclaiming Gotham. According to Gonzales, since 2013, city politics have been dominated by more progressive politicians. As federal politics move to the right, Gonzales asks whether this polarity could erupt into elevated political tensions between urban interests and federal ones.
