On 2018 May Day, WorkWeek looks at the use of the Peer Assistance Program PAR to target senior teachers as well as African American and Latino teachers. We hear from Margaret Reyes a teacher in the San Francisco Unified School District SFSU and is represented by the United Educators of San Francisco. She has been bullied and refused to go into the PAR program and is now being disciplined by the school district executives.
We interview Brian Crowell, Berkeley Federation of Teachers BFT steward who was representing teachers and discovered the discrimination which his union leadership was involved in. He was then placed in the program in order to terminate him. He talks about how he discovered the conflicts of interest.
Next, we go to Palestine where we interview Palestinian journalist Nour Odeh about the murders of Palestinian journalists and the massive oppression by the Israeli government. She is a member of the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate and that organization along with the International Federation of Journalists is organizing to defend these journalists.
Last, we go to Puerto Rico, where thousands of workers are marching and we hear from labor researcher Ricardo Ortiz who reports on the mass protests against privatization of education, energy and other attacks.
