Preeti Shekar talks with Shivana Jorawar, Reproductive Justice Program Director at the National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum, about the strange case of Purvi Patel.  The 33-year-old Patel was sentenced to more than 20 years in prison for “feticide” and “neglect of a dependent” after seeking medical care for a miscarriage.

Understanding the Role of Race, Class, and Gender in Israeli Jewish Society

Smadar Lavie works at The Beatrice Bain Research Group, Berkeley’s feminist of color heaven. She is the author of WRAPPED IN THE FLAG OF ISRAEL: MIZRAHI SINGLE MOTHERS AND BUREAUCRATIC TORTURE, and cofounder of the Mizrahi Israeli feminist group Ahoti. Lavie explains the Israeli elections by looking at how race, class and gender function within Israeli society.

Blackademics

BLACKADEMICS, a satiric play about the challenges facing Black women academics, opens this Thursday, April 9th at The Thick House in San Francisco.  The play by Idris Goodwin is produced by Crowded Fire Theater.  Lisa Marie Rollins discusses the show with director Mina Morita and actor Safiya Fredericks.
