1:34 – The No New Jails Coalition is calling for the closure of San Francisco’s county jail at 850 Bryant. Advocates say people held there can be supported with access to affordable housing, mental healthcare, and diversion programs – for some 80% of the population in detention because they can’t afford cash bail. Furthermore, the jail has been deemed seismically unsafe since 1998, and has a myriad of structural, including leaking sewage. We’re joined by Andrew Szeto is a member of Critical Resistance, and Sam Lew is policy director with the Coalition on Homelessness, both members of the No New Jails Coalition.
