Today, November 1st, is Day 1 of the multi-day holiday Dia De Los Muertos or Day of the Dead, a Mexican cultural celebration honoring the dead. Prior to Spanish colonization in the 16th century, the celebration took place at the beginning of summer. Gradually, it was associated with November 1, and November 2 to coincide with the Western Christian All Saints’ Day, and All Souls’ DayScholars trace the origins of the modern Mexican holiday to indigenous observances dating back thousands of years to Aztec and Toltec people who believed that death was a natural part of life’s phases.

We speak with Itzel Diaz, one of the organizers of the Day of the Dead celebration in the Fruitvale district in Oakland, and the Development & Communications Manager for the Unity Council.
