Oil and Water

Refugio_Oil_Spill_in_Santa_BarbaraWe take you inside the oil spill on the Santa Barbara coast, then look at the bigger fights over oil policy in California, and around the world.

Guests:*

  • Greg Helms, manager of the Ocean Conservancy’s Fisheries Conservation Program; 25-year Santa Barbara Resident.
  • Miyoko Sakashita, Oceans Program Director at the Center for Biological Diversity
  • Antonia Juhasz, independent journalist who’s written several books about the politics of oil. Just out with an article in Harper’s looking at the long-term impacts of the Gulf Oil Spill, and an article article at rollingstone.com covering the movement in Seattle to blockade an oil rig destined for Alaska

*We requested an interview with a representative of Plains All American, the owner of the pipeline that ruptured, via the joint response center at Refugio Beach–they said no-one from the company was available during our broadcast. We also reached out to the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Administration, which is the federal agency that oversees this particular pipeline — we’d received no response by airtime.
