Understanding the racist mass shooting in Buffalo; Plus, fund drive special with Angela Davis

0:08 – The tragic mass shooting in Buffalo, New York, last weekend, was perpetrated by an 18 year old who livestreamed from his phone as he walked through a supermarket in a predominantly Black neighborhood, executing shoppers. In a 180-page manifesto, he explained that he targeted that supermarket specifically because it was in the most heavily Black zip code in New York state. He associates himself with a white nationalist conspiracy called “the great replacement theory,” which has also been used in other white terror attacks in recent history. We are joined by Michael Edison Hayden (@MichaelEHayden), senior spokesperson with the Southern Policy Law Center’s Intelligence Project – which monitors the radical right in the US.

0:20 – The “great replacement theory” targets Jewish people in addition to Black people. Peter Beinart (@PeterBeinart) is a Jewish professor, author, and journalist, who was named in the Buffalo gunman’s manifesto. He joins us to discuss how Jews are positioned in this white supremacist ideology and how finding his name in the manifesto has impacted him.

0:33 – The Tucker Carlson show on the Fox network, one of the most watched daily television shows in the country, has discussed and supported many of the ideas in the “great replacement theory.” Joining us to discuss how Fox has impacted white nationalism is Matt Gertz (@MattGertz), a senior fellow at Media Matters, where his work focuses on the relationship between Fox News and politics.

FUND DRIVE SPECIAL – Make any pledge and receive The Politics of Sex, a collection of powerful women speakers busting myths and breaking taboos about the reality of women’s lives, including the voices of Gloria Steinem, Angela Davis, and Eve Ensler.
