Oakland Unified School District, J20 Verdict, and Detained Immigrant UC Berkeley Student

California rent control limitation ordinance Costa Hawkins overturn re-surfaces in the political sphere, once again up for discussion. Executive Director of the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives Christina Livingston speaks with UpFront about the Costa Hawkins ordinance. Mike Hutchinson was a candidate for the District 5 seat on the Oakland Unified School District school board in California. Hutchinson was defeated in the by-district general election on November 8, 2016. He updates us on ongoing issues with the Oakland Unified School District. Rachel Gottfried is one of the J20 Resisters arrested for civil disobedience on Inauguration Day 2017 and is now facing criminal charges brought by SF District Attorney George Gascón. We hear from Rachel about the charges and upcoming proceedings after her acts of resistance. Ria Thompson-Washington, Executive Vice President at the National Lawyers Guild, augments the J20 discussion with a radical legal perspective. Third year UC Berkeley student Luis Mora contributes his account of his ongoing detainment trying to return to California after a holiday visit to Mexico. Valeria Suarez, Co-Chair of Rising Immigrant Scholars through Education (RISE), an undocumented empowerment organization at UC Berkeley contributes to the discussion of Mora’s detainment.
