KALW’s Uncuffed is the country’s leading radio and podcast training program for people in prison. In weekly classes taught by professional journalists, participants at San Quentin, Solano State Prison, and the California Institution for Women (CIW) learn how to make audio stories from start to finish using professional audio equipment and software. All stories workshopped in the training program air on KALW’s award-winning newsmagazine Crosscurrents, and some feature on Uncuffed’s acclaimed podcast as well.
Now, Daphnye Luster, one of Uncuffed’s former participants at CIW who is now on parole, brings us this program showcasing pieces produced in Uncuffed’s inaugural program at CIW. These stories of
fer nuanced and detailed stories of incarcerated women, who are often missing in discussions of our criminal legal system, and whose experiences transgress the stereotypes of what we know about people in prison.
