President Obama turns aside Republican nominee Donald Trump’s charges that the U.S. elections are rigged. Obama says Trump should quit whining. U.C. Berkeley faculty and staff hold what they call the nation’s first “Trump Teach-in”  The International Red Cross asks that the massive military campaign to retake the Iraqi city of Mosul from the Islamic State  not harm civilians. The president of one of the largest police organizations in the country apologizes for the historical mistreatment of people of color.  Santa Clara County jail inmates launch a two-week hunger strike against solitary confinement and other jail policies.
