Iraqi and Kurdish peshmerga forces launch a military offensive to retake the city of Mosul from the Islamic State. Humanitarian aid officials warn that up to 1.5 million Iraqi civilians remain in the city. Donald Trump takes his message  that the presidential election is being rigged to a new level — warning that the election is being rigged at “many polling places”. Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan says he’s confident the election will be conducted with integrity; Trump calls that claim “naive”.  A North Dakota judge refuses to allow a prosecutor to proceed with charging Democracy Now’s Amy Goodman for  participating in a “riot” for filming an attack on the Native American-led protest against the Dakota Access Pipeline. Supporters of the Proposition 61 drug pricing measure say its passage would help older Californians who typically take many medications. Big pharma has spent more than 80 million dollars so far to defeat it.
