Trump’s nominee to head the E.P.A., Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt,  tells a Senate confirmation hearing that he believes global warming is real, breaking with both his past statements and those of Donald Trump. A protest calls on Contra Costa County District Attorney Mark Peterson to resign after he admitted embezzling funds from his campaign committee for his personal use and then lying about it. A vigil at Berkeley City Hall marks the death of a homeless woman near Berkeley High School — a death advocates say could have been prevented if authorities had let them maintain their encampment.
