President Obama commutes the 35 year sentence of whistleblower Chelsea Manning. He also commutes the sentence of 74 year old Puerto Rican nationalist Oscar Lopez Rivera who has spent more than half his life in prison. Russian President Vladimir Putin springs to the defense of President-Elect Donald Trump, accusing the outgoing Obama Administration of trying to undermine him by spreading false allegations. Confirmation hearings get underway for Education Secretary Betsy DeVos and Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke. Oakland activists protest Mayor Libby Schaaf’s policies, accusing her of promoting racism in policing and gentrification policies. A homeless people’s assembly takes place on the streets of San Francisco.
