The Obama Administration announces it will begin phasing out the federal use of private prisons. Prison reform advocates hope states will follow the federal lead. Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump says he regrets some of his comments which may have caused “personal pain.” The billionaire Fisher brothers of San Francisco come under fire from environmental activists who say the family has  overseen the destruction of millions of trees in Mendocino County. Oakland tenants gather to protest skyrocketing rents.
