A damning report from the federal Justice Department  concludes that Baltimore police officers routinely discriminate against African Americans, repeatedly use excessive force and are not adequately held accountable for misconduct. The federal investigation was launched after last year’s death of Freddie Gray who was fatally injured in the back of a Baltimore police van.   A car strikes and severely injures a protester during a peaceful demonstration in Ferguson, Missouri, on the second anniversary of the fatal police shooting of unarmed 18 year old African American Michael Brown. The mothers of two young victims of last year’s Berkeley balcony collapse testify in favor of more transparency and tougher standards that could have averted the tragedy. Pentagon Papers whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg and other supporters of imprisoned army whistleblower Chelsea Manning urge the U.S. Army to drop disciplinary charges against her related to Manning’s suicide attempt and to provide treatment for her gender dysphoria and suicide attempt.
