In another installment of the approximately annual “Derk and Dirk Show” edition of “The Hear and Now,” singer-songwriter Dirk Hamilton joins host Derk Richardson in the KPFA studio and sings five songs live, accompanying himself on acoustic guitar, and talking about the ins and outs of songwriting and the ups and downs of a career that has spanned more than 40 years and 20 albums. He plays The Back Room in Berkeley on Friday, April 19.

In the second hour, composer/trumpeter/music therapist JAB (known to Bay Area indie music fans for his work in Baby Snufkin, Bitches Brew, Idiot Flesh, and more) shares new, unreleased music, including movements from his opera-in-progress and compositions that will be played by the Dave Parker Sextet on Saturday, April 20, at Bird and Becket Books and Records in San Francisco. He also talks a bit about his work as founder and director of Empowering Lives through Music.
