Talkies

Talkies – April 25, 2019

On this edition of the Talkies. Guest host Max Pringle chats with the author of a new biography of Britain’s wartime Prime Minister Winston Churchill. The book uses new source material to present a fuller picture of one of the 20th Century’s most studied lives. British historian Andrew Roberts got access to previously classified wartime diaries and documents, which had been unavailable to previous biographers.

In the second segment we move from a man who, decades ago, recognized early on the threat posed by extreme right wing movements, to the modern threat of a new far-right populism taking root in countries around the world. Max Pringle spoke with UC Berkeley’s Lawrence Rosenthal. He’s Chair and lead researcher at UC Berkeley’s Centre for Right-Wing Studies. The Centre is hosting the inaugural conference on right wing studies this week. The conference runs today through Saturday. Expert panels will examine the influence of far-right and nativist populist movements around the world, how they relate to movements of the past and what can be done today to confront it.

In the final segment, we’ll switch gears to focus on an effort in the North Bay to set up a community food co-op that would offer locally sourced, healthy and environmentally sustainable food options. The Cultivate Community Food Co-op’s founder Paula Schnazy is our guest.
