From Honduras to Brazil, Latin American Democracy in Peril

Is Latin American democracy in peril? From Honduras to Brazil, leftward movements that had gained power in the past decades are seeing serious setbacks. On our show today we’ll speak with Vicki Cervantes of the Honduras Solidarity Network about the reelection of Juan Orlando Hernndez in Honduras and the corruption conviction of Brazil’s former President Lula. Then, we’ll take a look at the political theater that Senate Republicans engaged in on Monday, ahead of Donald Trump’s first State of the Union address. The so-called Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act was introduced and defeated in a Senate procedural vote as part of the GOP’s on-going push to overturn Roe. V. Wade – my guest Christine Grimaldi of Rewire will explain more. Finally long-time feminist author and academic Cynthia Enloe will join us for a discussion about sustaining a transnational and intersectional feminism in the era of #MeToo and the Women’s Marches. Her new book is called The Big Push: Exposing and Challenging the Persistence of Patriarchy. . Hosted by Sonali Kolhatkar.
