Rising Up With Sonali 5am

Rising Up With Sonali – January 22, 2018

On today’s show we’ll continue our coverage of the Los Angeles Into Action pop-up art exhibit and conference covering social justice issues and activism. We’ll begin with a report from a Women’s March sign-making party where several young women who plan to march on Saturday tell me about their signs and why they march. Then Iranian American artist Ami Motevalli will discuss her art, politics, and activism. We’ll also cover a new nationwide campaign to address inequality based on Dr. Martin Luther King’s Poor People’s Campaign. Kait Ziegler who is the co-founder of the California chapter of the newly launched Poor People’s Campaign will explain what it’s all about and how people can get involved. Finally, we’ll play part 1 of a powerful conversation I had with John Carlos, the 1968 Olympian who made history when he raised his fist along with Tommie Smith, and Etan Thomas, former pro basketball player who has now turned his focus on progressive activism. The two of them will discuss the role of athletes in the movement.

Hosted by Sonali Kolhatkar.
