On todays show, well examine the prison-industrial complex in the U.S. First, the ACLU of Southern California is suing Riverside County over a bizarre program that criminalizes students for such things as bad grades or acting out. Well speak with attorney Hannah Comstock about the program and why its unconstitutional. Then, investigative journalist Rebecca Burns discusses a recent ACLU report about the return of “debtor’s prisons” in the US and how millions of American are threatened with jail time every year for debts as low as a few dollars. Finally, James Garbarino joins us to discuss his book, Miller’s Children: Why Giving Teenage Killers a Second Chance Matters for All of Us. Garbarino has served as an expert psychological witness in dozens of re-sentencing hearings of people convicted for crimes committed as juvenile.
