On today’s show, Mitch Jeserich send us a Letter about immigration and power, and what we can learn from history about it.
Then we are in conversation about women code breakers during World War II and the recognition they never received until now. Our guest is Liza Mundy, author of the book Code Girls: The Untold Story of the American Women Code Breakers of World War II.

Mitch, why do you constantly refer to Greece, Rome and the United Snakes as prime examples of ideal society. Greece, Rome, and the US were slave states, or in the case of US, a slave state that morphed in to a racist lynching state. You consistently leave out the USSR and Maoist China (1949-1976) as examples of developed states. Theses societies opposed slavery.
It could easily be argued that the totalitarian states of the 20th century merely represented another form of slavery. One in which the state itself is the slavemaster, rather than a private slaveowning class. “Socialized”slavery perhaps:-)
While I wouldn’t want to speak for Mitch I would bet that if were to reply he’d say that Greece and Rome are usefully studied as precursors to American society, with none of the three being anything like ideal societies.
