Condo Development in East Oakland; Plus, SF Nonprofits Unionize

On today’s show, redevelopment is afoot in East Oakland with proposals that could further the gentrification of Oakland. Both Eastmont Mall and Mills College are being targeted for market rate condos and retail. We speak with Leah Simon-Weisberg, Legal Director of The Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment (ACCE) Action and Shay Franco-Clausen, a Mills alumni who has been part of the lawsuit students filed against the school.

Then, GLIDE Memorial Church is trying to unionize. We speak with Mario Lemos, an Organizing Committee member of the GLIDE United union with OPEIU L-29. He works for GLIDE Foundation. We also speak with Juliana Dunn, an organizing committee member of the Better Compass For All union with OPEIU L-29. They have worked for Compass Family Services—a prominent social services agency in San Francisco serving families facing houselessness and housing insecurity—for about two years and currently work as a Bilingual Case Manager and Bilingual Afterschool Coordinator for Compass’s transitional housing site, Clara House.
