Oakland Teachers on Strike; Black FedEx Driver Chased and Shot by White Father/Son Duo; Plus, Angelversary of Alan Blueford

The Oakland Education Association – Oakland’s teachers union – is on strike as of Thursday, May 4th. We speak with two Oakland teachers from the picket lines about why they’re striking, what they need in their contract, and how the strike might impact families, along with a parent activist whose children are OUSD students.

Then, we go to Mississippi to talk with D’Monterrio Gibson, a 24-year old Black FedEx driver who was chased and shot by a white father and son in January of 2022 in Brookhaven, Mississippi, about 55 miles south of Jackson. The shooters have a court date on Monday, May 8th. We’re also joined by D’Monterrio Gibson’s mother, Sharon McClendon.

Then, we’re back to the Bay Area, this time in conversation with Jeralynn Blueford, mother of Alan Blueford, an eighteen year old Skyline High School student who was shot and killed by Officer Miguel Masso of the Oakland Police Department on May 6, 2012. The Bluefords are organizing a Unity Walk for Saturday, May 6th – the 11th anniversary of the murder of their son.
