Reuters report, “Helpless and Hooked.”

this episode is no longer available

Up next, we talk about a body of research that’s challenging the stability of America’s inner city families and more importantly infants born to addicted mothers. Last month, Reuters in partnership with NBC News released an investigative report, “Helpless &Hooked: the most vulnerable victims of America’s opioid epidemic.” It alleged that the failure of physicians and hospitals to consistently report women who used drugs while pregnant (including those who used drugs prescribed by physicians) and the failure of child welfare systems to intervene in such cases directly or indirectly contributed to the preventable deaths of 110 infants nation-wide.

We were joined by Lynn Paltrow, the Executive Director of the National Advocates for Pregnant Women one of the lead organizations that has been highly critical of the Reuters’ report.
