Curator Chris Cory:
“It has been a couple of months now since our Straight Out of Cairo show (Episode 165), but the impact that show had on me has lasted. Less like a bruise than an infection. I keep circling back to Cairo and finding more and more intriguing music. This time, in the form of two Cairo labels that escaped my attention last time- Moskatell and Nasazphone.
So, this morning, we are going to review those labels in a unique and jarring way- by interspersing tracks from both of them. I say jarring because the repertoire of these two labels is wildly different. Moskatell occupies the avant-pop part of the spectrum. Mostly pleasant and melodic, it flirts with experimental on one extreme, and straight pop on the other. Nashazphone is nakedly and wildly avant garde and abrasive, but also has some archival projects, one of which you will hear toward the end of the second hour.”
