I have heard your guest (Sept. 30) on KPFA before, but never got her name. She wrote about the “deep story” of the Deep South conservatives who have been marginalized by government and companies and now embrace Trump as their “knight in white armor.” She tells their story in such a perceptive and engaging manner, listened to them and showed them respect. I cannot find her name, or the name of her book. Please post that, and thank you for a wonderful program.
We wonder why people vote against their best interest, and here this author goes a long way to ansering that question. Imagine the Berners (now Steiners) embracing their comrades in the South, listening to them, treating them with respect and demonstrating how much we have in common. Imagine what a partnership could be forged!
Once, during the Nuremberg Actions protests at the Concord Naval Weapons Station, one of us noticed a counter-protester screaming at us, apoplectic, and walked over to her and calmly asked her what she was afraid of. With persistence the tow women engaged in conversation that went on at length. She woman with NA recognized that much of anger comes from fear, and, by the simple act of asking a question, then listening, a strong enmity was overcome and a tentative bond forged.
As Rabbi Michael Lerner has told us, it is vitally important for us to listen to each others’ stories.
The author you hosted this morning has become a great spokesperson for constructive, respectful engagement. What a wonderful gift she has offered us! Let us share that gift.
