  • Israel assassinates a leader of the Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad, in a helicopter attack in the Gaza Strip; 3 others die in that attack as well. A half-hour later, a Palestinian suicide bomber kills 4 Israelis in an attack near Tel Aviv
  • Iraqi resistance fighters mount several attacks against U.S. forces and Western institutions around Baghdad
  • A laboratory in Britain confirms U.S. evidence that a cow slaughtered earlier this month in Washington State did have B.S.E., or Mad Cow Disease, marking the first time the disease has been found in the U.S.
