Iconic Moments in KPFA's 75 Years

Pauline Kael – 1963

Pauline Kael (1919 – 2001) was an American film critic who wrote for The New Yorker from 1968 to 1991. Known for her “witty, biting, highly opinionated and sharply focused” reviews. Kael broadcast many of her early reviews on  KPFA. She married Edward Landberg, the owner of the Berkeley Cinema-Guild and Studio. Though their marriage soon ended in divorce, he made Kael the manager of the cinema in 1955, a position she held until 1960. In that role, she programmed the films at the two-screen facility, “unapologetically repeating her favorites until they also became audience favorites.” (From Wikipedia)

These recordings of Pauline Kael’s last KPFA broadcasts aired on Dec. 8, 1962 and Jan. 5, 1963.
