CA Cuts Public Defense Grant Funds While Inflating Policing Budget w/ Brendon Woods

State funding for public defenders is being scrapped by Governor Gavin Newsom, who ran for office on a platform of reforming the criminal legal system. While over-funding an already-inflated policing budget over false claims of a retail theft crisis – to the tune of $300 million – the Governor has announced $40 million in cuts to public defense funds that were intended to support reducing the state’s prison population. Joining us to discuss is Brendon Woods, the first Black Chief Public Defender of Alameda County who has also served as the president of the California Public Defenders Association.
