Our colleague Lewis O. Sawyer Jr. has died at the age of 87. His health had been deteriorating of late and he died at a doctor’s visit. Lewis was a dedicated KPFA apprentice and music programmer. He hosted Early Morning Music with The Experience Collective previously titled, The Lewis Sawyer Experience. Lewis had a magnificent voice and radio presence. He was passionate about social and criminal justice. He served for many years as a staff representative on the KPFA Local Station Board. Early in his life, he was a boxer and always kept in great physical condition. Lewis was a wonderful, kind and warm-hearted man. Our condolences to his family, Jaz Sawyer and Esther Sawyer.
We continue to love you, dear Lewis Sawyer!
HE WILL BE MISSED.
Such a loss! I will miss Louis. Somehow, in my mind he was always supposed to be here with KPFA. Louis was a truly decent man with a kind and thoughful spirit; let’s keep that alive as we go forward.
I send my sincere condolences to his family. Barbara Barbour
I am sorry I never met Lewis. He sounds like a quiet and powerful presence. What a lovely human being! I hope to emulate his spirit.
Lewis was the best of KPFA for many, many years! We love and will miss him always!
My Dearest Lewis, thank you so incredibly much for all of your kindness and generosity whenever we bumped into each other at volunteering events. I remember at one KPFA Holiday Fair, you rather saved at least me from that one cruel man when you arrived to the KPFA booth and heard that we needed help. It was so awesome how within seconds you wordlessly and silently were able to ward off evil with your noble and knightly spirit. I hope so much that you’re listening and sharing your musical knowledge with joy. Much peace and love to you always. My condelences to your family and loved ones too as we all miss you.
