Idris Hassan, Chocolate Beats Radio

Idris Hassan is media artist and cultural documentarian working in Oakland, CA and throughout the Bay Area. Hassan’s work explores the deep context between the subjects and their environment, incorporating the themes of healing, belonging, and an exploration of the Diaspora. Before working in visual media, Idris held a career as an entertainment journalist, contributing to various national publications such as VIBE and Rap Sheet.

Hassan is a graduate of the First Voice Media Action Apprenticeship program at KPFA and has worked on a number of shows at KPFA including Full Circle, Hard Knock Radio, and the Morning Show. She also instructs classes in radio broadcast digital editing and feature production for the Apprentice Program. Idris Hassan is the Creative Director of Chocolate Beats Media, which was founded in 2009 to provide down to earth radio programming, innovative cultural event documentation, and a holistic digital media experience.  She is the Producer and Host of Chocolate Beats Radio on KPFA 94.1 FM, which features music and artist interviews. She has produced and aired audio projects including news segments, PSAs, interviews, and feature stories highlighting guests such as Actor and Activist Harry Belefonte, Singer Marie Daulne of Zap Mama, Hip Hop Artist Medusa, and “Funk Jazz Cafe” creator Jason Orr.
