Jazz pianist/composer David Lopato‘s music is deeply informed by his study of Javanese gamelan in Indonesia. The most palpable evidence is his critically acclaimed double CD, Gendhing for a Spirit Rising. The New York native and resident is visiting the Bay Area for a pair of concerts on January 12 and 13–and a visit to KPFA to perform live on The Hear and Now with saxophonist/clarinetist Lucas Pino and bassist Kent McLagan. Tune in at 10 p.m., right after The Bonnie Simmons Show, and listen to Lopato’s remarkable, jazz-based but undefinable music, and his conversation with host Derk Richardson. Tony Ferro engineers the sound.
