A House of My Own: Stories from My Life is a non-fiction collection spanning nearly three decades of Cisneros’ remarkable life. She takes us from the private (such as her parents’ loving and tempestuous marriage) to the political (a rallying cry for one woman’s liberty in Sarajevo), to the literary – a tribute to author Marguerite Duras. From the Chicago neighborhoods where she grew up and set her first groundbreaking novel to her abode in Mexico, in a region where her ancestors lived for centuries, Cisneros takes us on a delightfully intimate journey through the map of her life. As she declares in her introduction, “I’m ending my sixth decade. A new cycle of life is opening and an old one closing. I’m in between lives and in between houses, writing from the other side of the U.S.-Mexican border…And with that, I wish to look backwards and forward all at once.”

Sandra Cisneros is the author of two novels: The House on Mango Street, and Caramelo, plus a collection of short stories, Woman Hollering Creek, two poetry books (My Wicked Wicked Ways and Loose Woman), a children’s book (Hairs/Pelitos), and a picture book for adults, “Have You Seen Marie?” In addition, she is the founder of two organizations that serve writers – The Macondo Foundation and the Alfredo Cisneros del Moral Foundation. Among her many awards are the MacArthur Fellowhsip, two National Endowments for the Arts Fellowships, and a Texas Medal of the Arts. Her books have been translated into more than a dozen languages.
Vylma v is Puerto Rican, an activist, human rights attorney and former public defender. Currently for KPFA she is the news editor for La Raza Chronicles, one of the hosts for Women’s magazine, and has guest-hosted for Livingroom, Saturday Morning Talkies and UpFront. She is also the executive producer of Goddess on the Radio, which airs on KPFB 89.3 every Saturday at 2pm.
