Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico and Magnitude 7.1 Earthquake in Mexico

First off on today’s show, we hear about Hurricane Maria’s impact on Puerto Rico from Salvador Tio in San Juan, Puerto Rico, a veteran civil rights attorney and a member of the movement for Puerto Rican independence.

Next, Sarah Hayley Barrett, a freelance journalist based in Mexico City, gives an eyewitness account of the destruction in Mexico City and community response to the tragedy. Then, we hear from Diego Melgar, Associate Professor of Earth Sciences at the University of Oregon and an expert on large earthquakes in Mexico. He grew up in Mexico City and remembers the rebuilding of the city in the wake of the 1985 earthquake.
