The Politics of Climate Change, Plus: Republican Tax Bill & Jose Garcia Zarate Trial

This morning on UpFront, hosts Cat Brooks and Brian Edwards-Tiekert talk to Joseph Majkut, a libertarian policy expert trying to nudge Republicans to action on climate change. They discuss the partisan divisions on climate change and why the U.S. government should be present in global climate talks.

Then, Cat Brooks continues the conversation on climate change with Jeff Goodell, author of The Water Will Come: Rising Seas, Sinking Cities, and the Remaking of the Civilized World. They talk about the economic impact that rising sea levels could have on working class people who purchase land in vulnerable areas.

After that, former Republican politician and current professor of law Thomas Campbell joins UpFront to review the Republican tax bill. He explains fractures within the Republican Party and assesses the bill’s likelihood of passing.

Finally, journalist Tim Redmond talks to Brian Edwards-Tiekert about the trial of Jose Garcia Zarate, an undocumented immigrant who is on trial for the 2015 death of Kate Steinle. They discuss the inconsistencies in Garcia Zarate’s confession and whether or not the fatal shot was accidental.
