Day 1 of the Trump impeachment hearings: State Department witnesses identify troubling alternative foreign policy by Trump; Plus: Why is violence in Oakland increasing?

0:08 – Impeachment Watch: Debriefing Trump impeachment hearings –  Day 1

The House holds the first open hearings as part of the impeachment inquiry into President Trump, with two witnesses:  Ambassador William Taylor, the Chargé D’affaires for the U.S. State Department in Ukraine and Secretary George Kent, Deputy Assistant Secretary in the European and Eurasian Bureau at the U.S. Department of State.

New: Ambassador Taylor testified his aid overheard EU Ambassador Gordan Sondland speaking with Trump over speaker phone, and mentioned the word “investigation.” The Republicans tried to discredit the witnesses as invoking hear-say, and never speaking with Trump directly about these issues.

1:08 – Weeks after an Oakland Unified School District turned violent – when police assaulted and violently arrested six parents, including sending one to the hospital, while protesting school closures – the OUSD Board members met again last night. The Black Organizing Project is demanding OUSD disband its police department – the only school police force in Alameda County – and reinvest in support and resources for students including counselors, programs and enrichment.
