0:08 — We air an interview with artists and naturalist Obi Kaufmann, author of The State of Water and The Forests of California. He discusses how California became a dry state with an agriculture industry demanding a large amount of water, and calls for a “new dawn towards sustainable community.” Listeners can get a copy of The Forests of California for $275, The State of Water for $100 Book, and both books for $365.

0:34 — This year marks the 30th anniversary of Oakland Hills firestorm, when the kind of blaze that we’re accustomed to seeing tear through remote ares hit one of the most densely-populated parts of the state. It killed 25 people, including a fire chief, and it destroyed over 3,000 homes. We air the East Bay Yesterday Special – The Oakland Hills Fire, in which our colleague, Liam O’Donohue from East Bay Yesterday, went out to where it happened to interview one of the people who was there from the very beginning: firefighter Bill Nichols. Make a pledge to KPFA to receive emergency supplies: $120 for a lifestraw water filter, $200 for an emergency solar/crank radio, $300 for an emergency supply kit for two people for three days, and $500 for ALL THREE.
