North Bay Fire Disaster Continues, Damage Increases

First thing, during this morning’s coverage Brian speaks with Supervisor Belia Ramos, Chair of Napa County Board of Supervisors about hot-spots and the spread of fire in the affected area. Belia asks that evacuees that are outside of evacuation centers but are otherwise alright register themselves at safeandwell.org so that loved ones and the county know who has safely evacuated. Cal Fire Assistant Deputy Director and spokesperson Daniel Berlant communicates the ongoing weather patterns that might impact fire containment and spread.

We then hear from Chris Rogers, Council Member for the City of Santa Rosa. Previously a Senior District Representative in the California State Senate, Chris details the efforts being made to control the Tubbs fire in Santa Rosa and who the impacted populations in Santa Rosa are.

We hear from Amalia Contardi of KBBF Radio, a station based in Santa Rosa that offers bilingual coverage to Northern California, and the majority of the fire impacted area. Additionally we hear from several callers in the impacted area about the conditions that they are dealing with daily.

Christy Lubin, the director of the Graton Day Labor Center, speaks with UpFront about shelters and Spanish speaking families who are in need of Spanish language aid.The Graton Day Labor center is a worker-led day labor center that organizes with domestic workers and day laborers in West Sonoma County, CA for the advancement of their rights and dignity as workers, as immigrants, and as members of the broader community. Christy mentions the mutli-family households, undocumented laborers, and the ongoing housing crisis in Sonoma County. Additionally, Christy mentions the lack of immigration enforcement present in the impacted areas in an effort to assuage concerns from immigrants that their status will exacerbate existing issues.

Finally, Brian speaks with A. Park Williams, a Lamont Associate Research Scientist at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. Williams elaborates upon a study he participated in that focused on the ways that Climate Change may exacerbate fire conditions.
