Behind the attacks on Oakland’s rank choice voting; plus the Jailhouse Lawyer Initiative w/ Jhody Polk, and a new commemorative bench to honor Colby Wells in Stockton

On today’s show, we discuss the attacks on Oakland’s rank choice voting system ahead of the election. Shomik Mukherjee covers Oakland, with a focus on local politics, developments and activism for the East Bay Times. His latest story is “Rank choice voting is expanding around the country – but in Oakland, it’s under attack.”

Last week, the Jailhouse Lawyer Initiative convened a conference called Flashlights: Jailhouse Lawyers, Legal Empowerment and Building a Just World Together,” a historic convening of jailhouse lawyers in dialogue with justice allies that “illuminates the power and promise of legal empowerment to advance justice from the inside out.” We’re joined by Jhody Polk, the founder of the Jailhouse Lawyer Initiative which is currently housed at the Bernstein Institute for Human Rights at NYU School of Law.

Colby Wells was a father, son, aspiring artist and mentor, and at 30 years old he was murdered by David Wells of the Stockton Police Department on August 16, 2016. Wells mistook the unarmed Colby for a domestic violence suspect, and shot him 8 times. Officer David Wells went on to kill another community member in July of 2020. Colby’s mother, Dee Friday – affectionately known to many as Mama Dee has since dedicated her life to fighting for justice not for just herself but for all families impacted by state violence including sponsoring an annual backpack giveaway.

This Saturday, Oct 26 at 10am there will be a commemorative bench unveiling in Colby Friday’s memory at Weberstown Park in Stockton, CA.
