How Florida prisons are responding to Hurricane Milton; plus Oakland renews gunshot surveillance technology despite opposition

On today’s show: how Florida prisons are responding to Hurricane Milton, with Ethan Corey, The Appeal’s Research & Projects Editor.

Despite community opposition, Oakland city council voted to renew OPD’s contract with ShotSpotter through December 2025 for $840,000 per year. The technology is used to detect and locate gunshots throughout the city, but critics, including our guest points out there is no independent data or transparency by the service provider and law enforcement to support its use.

Brian Hofer is the executive director of Secure Justice, a non-profit that advocates against state abuse of power, and for reduction in government and corporate overreach. He has also been the Chair of Oakland’s Privacy Advisory Commission since 2016.

In 2014, Malad Baldwin was violently beaten by the Antioch police department while his mother Kathryn Wade watched in horror – the beating left Baldwin – who at one point wanted to be a correctional officer deeply depressed and in 2021 – Baldwin died – the police say he committed suicide but his mother believes he died as a result of interactions with law enforcement. She has since filed a lawsuit. His mother Kathryn Wade joins us this morning.
