Challenging Prison Slavery from California to Alabama; Oakland Budget Woes; Plus State Terror Roundup

We start today’s show out with our recurring segment, the State Terror Roundup.

Then, Oakland is in a budget crisis and appears on the verge of bankruptcy. Meanwhile the police union is rejecting an idea of cuts to their staff. Oakland is faced with hard choices, and we’re joined to discuss by James Burch, Deputy Director of the Anti-Police Terror Project.

Then, a short conversation on the failure of California state Proposition 6, which would have ended slavery for incarcerated people. The bill was led by All of us or None, and had virtually no opposition, but lost significantly in the election. We’re joined by Dorsey Nunn, founder of All of us or None.

Then, to Alabama, where lawyers are working with prisoners to end the practice of slavery for incarcerated people in that state. We talk with CJ Sandley, a senior staff attorney at the Center for Constitutional Rights based in Birmingham, Alabama, who is one of the attorneys on the case challenging that state’s usage of prison slavery.
