SF Paid $70m for Police-Related Civil Settlements; Atlanta Defunds Shelters While Funding Cop City; Plus, State Terror Roundup

We start today’s show with our ongoing Thursday segment, the State Terror Roundup.

Local non-profit news site Mission Local has published a 2-part investigative report this week on civil settlements involving San Francisco law enforcement that has cost taxpayers roughly $70 million dollars since 2010. We’re joined by Will Jarret, Mission Local’s data reporter and lead investigator on the two-part series titled: “$70 million dollars in SF law enforcement settlements” and ‘Some SFPD cops appear in civil court again and again.”

The Cop City project has become a national flashpoint for the struggle against police excesses and the underfunding of social programs and organizations. On today’s show we go deeper into some of the background behind Cop City, and what it means for the city of Atlanta to make these funding choices, at the expense of defunding social programs. Our guest is Ariana Brazier, a Black queer feminist mom who wrote her doctoral dissertation on the intersections of housing insecurity and the ways that Black children and families play – in Atlanta. We’ll be talking about Ariana’s piece for Scalawag Magazine that draws a direct line from the 2017 closure of the region’s largest homeless shelter Peachtree-Pine, and plans for creating Cop City.
