We start today’s show with our weekly State Terror Roundup segment.
Then, we go to Memphis, where talk with Amber Sherman about the recent police killing of Tyre Nichols, a young Black man who was pulled from his car for allegedly driving recklessly, and beaten for three full minutes by five officers. He was hospitalized on January 7th and succumbed to his injuries three days later. The five officers have been fired and the community is calling for criminal charges to be filed and the body camera footage to be released. Amber Sherman is an organizer with Decarcerate Memphis and a member of Black Lives Matter Memphis. She is a native Memphian and a nationally known political strategist, activist, organizer, and host of her own podcast called The Law According to Amber.

Finally, we go to Los Angeles to speak with Harold Welton, a member of the Coalition to Free Ruchell Magee. Harold has been fighting for the liberation of Black people and all people for many decades, since being a member of the Southern California chapters of SNCC and then the Black Panther Party. Ruchell Magee is the longest held political prisoner in the country. He was first captured in 1963 on trumped-up charges related to a marijuana deal, and later became implicated as the lesser-known co-defendent in the same case that made Angela Davis famous, related to the Marin County Courthouse rebellion led by Jonathan Jackson. Ruchell is now 83 years old, and the coalition is trying to get him free.
