We start today’s show in San Francisco, where police issues at the city level seem to be ever-increasing, from Mayor London Breed planning to increase spending on police, to the force violating their own high speed chase policy, and a repressive response to drug users while politicians – including the police chief – say that they support non-law-enforcement alternatives while refusing to fund those programs. We’re joined by Tim Redmond, the founder of 48hills. He has been a political and investigative reporter in San Francisco for more than 30 years and spent much of that time as executive editor of the Bay Guardian.

Then, we look at state funding for public defenders being scrapped by Governor Gavin Newsom, who ran for office on a platform of reforming the criminal legal system. While over-funding an already-inflated policing budget over false claims of a retail theft crisis – to the tune of $300 million – the Governor has announced $40 million in cuts to public defense funds that were intended to support reducing the state’s prison population. Joining us to discuss is Brendon Woods, the first Black Chief Public Defender of Alameda County who has also served as the president of the California Public Defenders Association.
