CA Spends $132,000 Each Year to Imprison a Community Member; Protest for a Ceasefire at Richmond’s Chevron Refinery; Plus Mouf//Full Performance in SF

We start today’s show with our State Terror Roundup.

A new report from CalMatters shows that California’s averages more than $132,000 in spending for each person kept in prison, per year. That amount is 90% higher than the cost to imprison someone just ten years ago in 2014. Joining us to discuss is Brian Kaneda, the Deputy Director of Californians United for a Responsible Budget (CURB), which is an organization dedicated to reducing imprisonment in our state by developing deep economic analyses about how it’s actually financially better for all of us, to reduce prisons.

Then we go to Richmond, where activists are planning a protest at the Chevron refinery against support of Israel’s genocide in Gaza as well as the company’s problematic environmentally racist policies here at home. That protest is set for Saturday, February 3rd. We’re joined by Keala Uchoa, a youth organizer with Communities for a Better Environment in Richmond, who is one of the organizers of Saturday’s protest.

Then, to San Francisco, where we highlight Mouf//Full, a performance presented by CounterPulse in San Francisco this weekend. Mouf//Full is an exploration of faith’s limits through a Black queer interdisciplinary lens. We’re joined by the performance’s co-directors, Gabriele Christian and Chibueze Crouch.

This week’s Resistance in Residence Artist is composer, pianist, vocalist, interdisciplinary artist, and sur-realist, Samora Pinderhughes.
