Last Sunday, on the eve of the National Democratic Convention, #NotAnotherBomb protests took place across the country – including New York, Atlanta, Albuquerque, Boston, Los Angeles, and Oakland, California—the hometown of Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee demanding an end to U.S. arms shipments to Israel. In response to the July 6, 2024 heat related death of Adrienne Boulware and the August 2, 2024 brutal use of force by correctional staff against the incarcerated community imprisoned in the Central California Women’s Facility, CCWF in Chowchilla, the formerly incarcerated community across California and parts of Nevada are coming together to protest and demand justice. We’re joined by Sol Mercado, a Reentry Coordinator with Planting Justice, and Leesa Nomura is a formerly Incarcerated Abolitionist Organizer for the Aug 19th Protest Action.
In regard to the heat and climate, demands include: installation of AC in replace of current swamp cooler systems, installation of cold water dispensing units in ALL housing and work areas, state issued fans for every incarcerated person, state issued cooling rags and blankets during summer months.
In regard to the August 2, 2024 Use of Excessive Force and Brutality, advocates are demanding:
-
Dispositions for all confiscated and destroyed property
-
Stop the illegal request to sign waiving of rights to sue
-
Provide access to medical (including 7219) and mental health services to all affected incarcerated persons upon request
-
Initiate an independent investigation of the excessive use of force on August 2nd
-
Remove the officers from D facility yard who were involved in the August 2nd incident while the investigation is pending
